HISTORY  OF  THE  COLLEGE

In the early sixties of the last century, Dr Jitendranath Nandi , a renowned Physician and a worthy son of the soil and a cluster of equality enterprising lovers of education came together to establish the college by donating land and fund and most importantly their time and effort to provide education upto the level of graduation to students from economically backward families who could not send their wards to the cities and specially to female students and students from backward classes.  This was a time when there was no college between Amta and Haripal from South to North and between the city of Howrah and this part of the districts of Howrah and Hooghly from East to West.  The college drew its name from the twin villages Purash and Kanpur as it was located at the junction of the two villages and the second half of the name was to commemorate the father of the leading founder.  The college opened on 29th September, 1966 by an order of the University of Calcutta and grew up to meet the dreams of people of a twenty miles square area surrounding the college.  Initially the college started with Arts and Commerce faculties.  Science faculty was introduced in 1986.  Presently it is a multi-faculty, co-educational degree college with Honours and General Courses affiliated to the University of Calcutta and aided by University Grants Commission and Government of West Bengal.

AMBIENCE  AND  CULTURAL  HERITAGE

The river Damodar flows nearby.  The adjacent area was once a great commercial hub.  The river, though now not in its original pristine glory, is yet a source of sustenance to local people, particularly farmers and fishermen.  The college is located beside a high embankment cum carriage-way which provides a highlandish landscape and a calm seclusion in a verdant campus.  Its solitude compensates for the distance and heals the fatigue.  Bharat Chandra Roy Gunakar, the renowned poet of the middle age and the writer of his masterpiece “Annadamongal”, was born in the village Penro, in the vicinity of the college.  An annual festival, popularly known as “Bharat Chandra Mela”, is celebrated with much fanfare.  The “Mela” is also a great cultural occasion in which erudite educationists participate with great enthusiasm, thereby enriching the locality.  The college has also subscribed to the cause of upholding this noble heritage.
